Comely Chimeras
$150.00
"Comely Chimeras" is part of an ABC series of limited edition prints celebrating queer critters in the animal queendom. Printed in five colors, the illustration is a photopolymer plate combined with handset wood and metal type. Letterpress printed with oil-based inks on 100% cotton Reich Savoy, each print measures 13 x 19 inches. This signed and numbered edition of 30 prints includes a description: While Chimera is the name of a specific butterfly species, the term describes a rare genetic anomaly called bilateral gynandromorphism. One in 10,000 butterflies emerge as half-female and half-male, or nonbinary. The phenomenon has been observed in insects, spiders, crustaceans, and birds. Chimeras may still exhibit ordinary movement and feeding habits, but reproduction depends on their anatomy. Queer Tails is a collaboration with illustrator Audra Laymon, researcher sweet pea, and printer Jessica Spring produced at Springtide Press with support from the Tacoma Artists Initiative Project.
